Parallels: Reiki Symbols and Meanings by Rahul Thadani

Reiki symbols have more than just deeper meaning, they have healing qualities. Reiki practitioners use several symbols to facilitate healing for others.

In other energy healing practices, such as healing touch, a practitioner may rub his/her hands together to generate heat and energy within their hands, then hold their hands over a recipient in need of healing and then transfer the heat and energy from their hands gently to the area that needs healing on a recipients body.

Within a reiki healing session, these symbols concentrate healing energy in the form, written in the air over a recipient, and then the energy is transferred to the recipient.
Excerpt:
Reiki is a form of therapy that makes use of the transfer of energy between human beings and objects. An integral part of any reiki therapy session are the various reiki symbols and meanings that form a part of the rituals. These reiki symbols are said to aid in the process of transferring energy, and any reiki therapy session would be incomplete without the presence of these reiki symbols and meanings.

Reiki symbols and meanings have gathered a large following around the world, and many people actively believe in the powers of reiki energy healing therapy. The origins of these reiki symbols and meanings can be found in the Sanskrit language, the language of spirituality and meditation. At the start of any reiki session, the practitioner will concentrate all of his/her energy to these symbols and then use that energy to heal a patient.

There are primarily 4 reiki symbols that are significant to this practice, and all of them have to be applied for some particular purpose.

The effectiveness of reiki is said to be more mental than physical, but patients regularly claim that it has solved their problems completely. Arguing with someone who says reiki works for them is pointless, as they have all the rights to maintain their belief system. Reiki symbols and meanings are well known all across the world now, and you'll find many reiki masters from all corners of the globe.

Reiki symbols and meanings are said to possess a great amount of power and energy, and it is said that they open doors to higher levels of awareness. There are cynics who regularly discard reiki as an effective healing technique, but the truth is that they work only for those people who genuinely believe in them.

The International Center for Reiki Training also explains the symbols' possible origins:
Usui Reiki symbols are not as mysterious as they might seem. They have actually been created from Japanese kanji which means they are simply words from the Japanese language. Their names can be found in a Japanese/English dictionary. The first two symbols vary from this somewhat. While the names of the Power and Mental/Emotional symbols are Japanese, the symbols themselves may be shamanic or a combination of Sanskrit and Japanese kanji. It is a practice of Japanese Buddhists' to sometimes combine ancient Sanskrit with Japanese kanji in their sacred writings and symbols so the way these first two symbols are drawn may have been influenced by this practice.

Parallels: English Alphabet has Numerology Meanings

There is a small but growing number of Filipinos that believe that the symbols of the baybayin writing system have deeper meanings. It is not uncommon for letters, pictographs and symbols to have deep hidden meanings---even magical power, for cultures around the world have rich histories and stories connected to symbols, letters and written words. Other countries and cultures too have symbols and writing systems that were multi-dimensional, that is, their writing systems in application could not only be read as words and every day messages or chronicles, but also could convey that meanings that were profound, sacred or even used as divination. Norse, Druidic, Tibetan, Hindu and Hebrew many other samples will be shared at this website. For more examples go to Parallels.

I just learned that in numerology, each letter of the alphabet has its own meanings.

Here is the first part of what I read about alphabets and numerology:

Numerology Meanings of the Letters of the Alphabet

Each letter of the alphabet has its own meaning in numerology profiles.
When doing a reading, if the letter occurs first in the name, or is the first vowel, it has more force than in other positions. Generally, the first letter has less force than the number of the full name at birth, yet depending on how well the letter does or does not resonate with the name.
Here are the 26 letters of the English alphabet, along with their numerological meanings.

The letter A —

Positive: Leader. Confident. Adventurous. Determined. Enterprising. Courageous.
Negative: Arrogant.

The letter B —

Positive: Bountiful. Sensitive. Cooperative. Amicable. Needs partner. Outdoors person.
Negative: Belligerent.

The letter C —

Positive: Creative. Social. Good-humored. Extravagant. Dexterous. Orator.
Negative: Negligent.

The letter D —

Positive: Balanced. Secure. Focused. High willpower. Persevering. An authority.
Negative: Stubborn.

Here is another finding: the deeper meanings and symbolism for sanskrit writing symbols from the book The Eastern Mysteries: An Encyclopedic Guide to the Sacred Languages by David Allen Hulse. Below are two lists taken from the book.

First list is the Symbolic Nature of the Sanskrit Alphabet, Sixteen Vowels:

Second list is the Symbolic Nature of the Sanskrit Alphabet, Thirty Four Consonants:

Parallels: Ba, B and Berkana

Bb
(B, second symbol of Western alphabet)

I just found out about Alphabet Gematria, that is, English letters are assigned number values for use in numerology and numeric comparisons of words. And I just read and found interesting thain english Gematria "B" is equivalent to 8 and "the profile of a pregnant worman". (See Synchromysticism Wiki - Alphabet (English))

(Berkana, Nordic Rune)

The equivalent of B in the nordic rune is Berkana and means something very close to "a pregnant woman," that is, it means "rebirth and feminine energy". (See Reference 1Reference 2)

(Ba, Philippine baybayin symbol)

Coincidentally, or not, the Philippine baybayin symbol of Ba manytimes is rendered looking like a B turned on its side and also represents feminine aspects.
The symbol for BA represents the first sound and syllable in Babae or Ba-i (tagalog and ilonggo words, respectively,  for "Female") .

It is interpreted by people in the Filipino Spirituality movement to be the symbol of the womb and also the symbol of the Feminine Principle.

I found this online publication on the deeper meaning of the Phoenician alphabet.

The Phoenician Sacred Letters: Divine Writing for Meditation and Divination
(c) by David Myriad Rosenbaum
Intro:
To start at the beginning of the history of my very distant ancestors, the Phoenicians, I had to look all the way back. Little in their own voice has survived: a few myths, scattered inscriptions, their alphabet. It is the latter which is subtlely revealing her secrets.
The Phoenician alphabet proved to be the mother of virtually all modern alphabets, the direct ancestor of our own Roman letters, as well as the Runic alphabet of the Norse. Now, since the Norse Runes are popularly valued as tools for meditation and divination -- each letter corresponding to a key word in their culture -- it occured to me that each Phoenician letter could be used in the same way.
A note on the sources: in the course of studying the numerous scholarly works I've drawn from for this work, I've learned that each letter of the alphabet does in fact have a hidden, or occult meaning...
What I have learned is that each Phoenican letter stood for a word that had great cultural significance in the world of the ancient Near East.
That at least some of the letters have a direct astronomical and astrological correspondence in the zodiac of the ancient world.

I found Margo's Magical Letter Page. Margo reads and writes dictionaries and in the process she discovered that sounds and syllables within words had shared meanings. She writes on her homepage:

I read dictionaries. And I write dictionaries. It was an occupation which seemed initially thrust unfairly upon me by financial necessity, one which over the years I have come to love deeply, one which I now practice fervently at my economic peril. It has taught me to experience words and language quite literally as living beings, as beings who outlive each of us, who are recording within their very selves the patterns of our thoughts, as beings who care a great deal how they are employed. I wander into their dominions ever more deeply moved, ever more faithful that there is after all a reason behind this chaos of experience.

She took the time to create charts and matrices with various alphabets from around the world and their meanings. Please use the following list to view her findings:

Towards the bottom of the page Margo also lists charts and images of various traditions that find meaning in symbolism. These links are fascinating and eye-opening. I will explore these, research them and share what I find in addition to her short descriptions.

Finally, Margo also took the time to provide an extensive bibliography on sound symbolism literature and icon interpretation! here is the link for your and my perusal: http://www.trismegistos.com/MagicalLetterPage/AnnotBiblio.html#anchor33414

Parallels: The Power of the Hebrew Aleph-Beis

There is a small but growing number of Filipinos that believe that the symbols of the baybayin writing system have deeper meanings. A dictum of Kabbalism teaches that the every letter of the Hebrew alphabet or Aleph-Beis has body spirit and soul! The 22 letters of the Aleph-Beis are profound, primal spiritual forces and are in effect, the raw material of Creation. When God combined them into words, phrases and commands, they brought about Creation, translating His Will into reality. Ancient Hebrew sages believed that the Aleph-Beis predated Creation and is the protoplasm of the universe thus that the there were powerful qualities to being able to combine letters because the combination of sacred letters is how heaven and earth were created. The knowledge of scred letters and what they represent was always a prerequisite for one who undertaks to build God’s Temple.

In Hebrew spiritual scholarship it is believed that the study of the Aleph-Beis can serve as an inspiration to return the the roots of the Hebrew/Judaic mission on earth. In Jewish thought, it is believed that the individual letters, their names, their graphic forms and respective positions are Divinely ordained.

Rabbi Mark Sameth unveils a mystery of the Hebrew letters that spell God. I found an article written by Gary Stern, in the Journal News • july 21, 2008. Here is the online version: Rabbi unveils a secret of God.

The Rabbi’s theological exploration is about the tetragrammaton of "YHWH", the four-letter, too-holy-to-speak name of God handed down by the ancient Israelites. According to Rabbi Sameth, the Hebrew letters represent both Male Aspect and Female Aspect. The interpretation of Hebrew writing symbols' deeper, sacred meanings is an ancient practice. Legend even tells of Jesus' own Torah studies as he explains to his teacher the meaning of Aleph, the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet.

There are similarities between this interpretation of the Hebrew symbols "YHWH" and the Filipinos interpretation of the baybayin symbols of "bahala" or "Bathala." The BA and LA symbols represent the Female and Male Principles, respectively. (See previous post "Meanings and Diwa (Idea or Spirit) within "Bahala" and "Bathala")
